Great snare:
I saw that the Lord has given the world opportunity to discover the snare. This one thing is evidence enough for the Christian, if there were no other; namely, that there is no difference made between the
precious and the vile. {EW 88.4}
Appetite:
Intemperance in eating and in drinking, and the indulgence of base passions have benumbed the fine sensibilities,
so that sacred things have been placed upon a level with common things. Nadab and Abihu drank too freely of wine, and the result was, they used common fire instead of sacred, and were destroyed for thus dishonoring God. When appetite is left to control reason, sacred things are not discerned. …But God never designed the swine to be eaten under any circumstances. Swine were useful. In a fruitful country, where there was much to decay upon the ground, which would poison the atmosphere, herds of swine were permitted to run free, and devoured the decaying substances, which was a means of preserving health. Other animals were forbidden to be eaten by the Israelites, because they were not the best articles of food. {4aSG 124.1}
In general:
I tell you now that you must have divine enlightenment. If you do not seek this, Satan will set up his hellish banner right in your homes, and you will be so blinded to the real nature of his deceptions that you reverence it as the banner of Christ. If you seek God with contrition of soul, His angels will be round about you, and will minister to you, helping you to
discern between the sacred and the common.
But a nominal faith, a nominal religion, will find no favor with God. {1SAT 82.1} sermons and talks
Sabbath:
Sabbath and Pleasure Seeking. God would have all His gifts appreciated. All fragments, jots, and tittles are to be treasured carefully, and we are carefully to become acquainted with the necessities of others. All that we have of Bible truth is not merely for our benefit, but to impart to other souls, and this is to be impressed upon human minds, and every kindly word spoken to prepare the way to make a channel through which the truth will flow forth in rich currents to other souls. Every working of Christ in miracles was essential, and was to reveal to the world that there was a great work to be done on the Sabbath day for the relief of suffering humanity, but the common work was not to be done. Pleasure seeking, ball playing, swimming, was not a necessity, but a sinful neglect of the sacred day sanctified by Jehovah. Christ did not perform miracles merely to display His power, but always to meet Satan in [his] afflicting suffering humanity. Christ came to our world to meet the needs of the suffering, whom Satan was torturing.--Letter 252, 1906, p. 3. {3MR 245.1}
Satan’s plan:
Satan himself was educated and disciplined in the heavenly courts, and he has a knowledge of good as well as of evil.
He mingles the precious with the vile, and this is what gives him his power of deceiving the sons of men. {RH, November 10, 1891 par. 2}
In the Church:
"Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are His. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honor, and some to dishonor." The "great house" represents the Church. In the Church will be found the vile as well as the precious. The net cast into the sea gathers both good and bad. {RH, February 5, 1901 par. 6}
Thoughts on this go in two ways: for example, if one takes a common day like Monday and treats it as holy, this is unholy. Or, if one takes a holy day such as Sabbath and treats it as common, this is unholy.
